      Project: Leveraging polymer-water interactions for damage detection in polymer composites, enabling sub-micron scale damage detection.Responsibilities:- Hands-on development of experimental setups and data processing algorithms.- Apply design-of-experiments methods.- Polymer composite sample fabrication. Curing and testing various thermoset polymer resin formulations.- Dielectric characterization using a vector network analyzer and split post dielectric resonator.- Material characterization using FTIR spectroscopy and on-going plans for extension to AFM-IR for nano-scale characterization.- Qualitative and quantitative spectral analysis of polymers, applied in moisture degradation and damage detection.- Applied machine learning using MATLAB and python in mapping of damaged areas in polymer composite laminates.- Applied FTIR & Raman spectrometers, optical & laser microscopes, SEM, XRD, XPS, AFM, DMA, and load frames in molecular analysis and material characterization.- Simulate microwave-frequency test environments for polymer composite materials using ANSYS and HFSS.- Developed MATLAB and python codes to automate experiments, employing Arduino micro-controllers, stepper motors, and 3D printed parts; controlled via a PC. This reduced testing time from over 4 hours to just 10 mins, while improving precision.- Performed fracture, fatigue, and stress analysis using ANSYS & Hypersizer to optimize materials used in ceramic and polymer matrix composite structures; saved up to 40% in weight.- Selection and application of advanced materials such as refractory metals, metal foams, polymers, ceramics, biomaterials, and advanced composites in extreme applications.- Material forensics and failure mode analysis for metals, polymers, and ceramic materials.- R&D and commercialization of a composite hydrogel multiple-drug delivery system.
