I was working on a project looking at the effect of over-expression of variant forms of alpha-synuclein on calcium signalling in human SH-SY5Y cells. I was responsible for generating and sustaining SH-SY5Y cells stably over-expressing variant forms of the protein alpha-synuclein and exploring its effect on calcium signalling pathways. I performed cell transfection through the use of JETPEI; monitored protein expression in my cells lines with western blotting, performed live cell imaging with FURA-2 AM dye, and experimented with TET operated gene expression in immortalised neuronal cell lines. Trainee Clinical Scientist

This position was a 4 year rotational clinical scientist training course in haematology. Throughout my rotational training I gained knowledge and experience which enabled me to perform routine and specialist diagnostic tests across all disciplines of diagnostic haematology. I undertook a number of research and development projects: 'the immunohistochemical detection of p53 overexpression in myelodysplastic syndrome with associated del(5q)' which I did in collaboration with the histopathology dept. and Professor Alan Warren at the University of Cambridge; 'Gene signatures in indolent mantle cell lymphomas' which I did in collaboration with the Professor Elliot Campo and the University of Barcelona ; 'heparin monitoring in heavily transfused patients' which i did in collaboration with Papworth Hospital cardiology department and Dr Martin Besser; and an in-house project looking at 'the detection of TP53 mutations in CLL patients'). These research projects enabled me to become contributing author on 4 peer reviewed publications. During my time in haematology, my preferred field was haemato-oncology, in particular genetics, so I decided to move into the field of genetics. Show less

      Stagiaire

In my final year of my training I took a 4 month unpaid, voluntary, secondment to work in Marseille, France in the Centre de Thérapie Cellulaire at the Institut Paoli-Calmettes to further my knowledge of stem cell and cord blood transplantation. I worked under the supervision of the Head of the JACIE committee, Professor Christian Chabannon to assess the viability of CD3+ cells in peripheral blood stem cells harvests after freeze-thaw processing.

Based within the myeloproliferative neoplasm team and bone marrow transplant monitoring with responsibilites to: manage the workflow; assign tests based on clinical referral reasons, clinical history and scientific knowledge; analyse and interpret test data; troubleshoot when require; and write reports. I analysed data obtained from various testing methods: RT-PCR; RQ-PCR; short tandem repeat analysis; droplet digitalPCR; Sanger sequencing; and G-band chromosome analysis. In addition to these duties, I also undertook duty scientist, scientific support, and Saturday working rota roles. Show less
