  After graduating from college, I joined my family’s multi-generation seafood business. Jackson Seafood Company was a fully integrated business which was based in Rockport, Texas for 75 years. In addition to owning and operating a fleet of gulf shrimp vessels, it also included shore side processing facilities, a marine hardware store and machine shop, an ice plant and a fuel dock for our own fleet, as well as others. The many up-and-down cycles in the shrimp fishery business necessitated occasional conversion to other fisheries like deep sea scallops in Virginia, calico scallops in Florida, longlining for swordfish, snapper and grouper in the Gulf, and even a short lived attempt at a satellite shrimp operation in South America. Numerous factors in the 1980s led to a decision to wind down the business and assets were liquidated in 1990 and 1991. Many years later, I wrote a book about my 17 year journey, titled “Taking the Tide,” which chronicled the family history and the tenacity, perseverance and resilience of living through and overcoming the many obstacles in the family business and how that experience led me to a successful second career in the financial services industry.
