  On June 29, 2006 a community meeting was called by City and County Commissioners in conjunction with other community leaders and residents to discuss the recent rise in violence in central city neighborhoods. In all, police are investigating 31 shootings and 12 homicides this year, an increase from 25 shootings and nine slayings during the same time in 2005. While there have been collaborative efforts involving community leaders, including pastors, it was the consensus that the community at large needed to become fully engaged in the resolution of this local crisis. The meeting, with over 300 participants, was convened by City Commissioners Elias Lumpkins and James White; County Commissioners James Vaughn and Paul Mayhue. City Commissioner Rosalynn Bliss also joined the discussion group. In addition, many community leaders were in attendance. The session was facilitated by Yvonne Sims and Rev. Robert Dean. Noah Seifullah and Ellen James were also key conveners of the meeting which was hosted by Pastor Howard Earle of New Hope Baptist Church. The session format was intended to obtain as much community input from community members in an effort to hear their concerns and to formulate a community driven response accordingly. The participants were divided into four groups and asked to consider four questions:1. What are the problems in our community that have resulted in the increase in violence?2. What are the latent causes that underlie each of these problems? 3. What are some solutions that will help to alleviate these problems?4. What are some measurable benchmarks that can help to evaluate the success of initiatives aimed at resolving these problems? Show less
