    • Commonwealth Foundation

      Jan 2011 - Jan 2013
Asian Representative of the Civil Society Advisory Committee

The Foundation recognises that, based in London, it is not possible to graspfully the many challenges that CSOs across the 53 countries of the Commonwealthface. In addition the Commonwealth Foundation is conscious of the diverse natureof organisations in civil society which include NGOs, faith based organisations, community based organisations, research-oriented, professional, culturalorganisations and labour organisations. In order to keep abreast with the sector andto develop programmes that address its needs and concerns, the Foundation needsto be in constant consultation with civil society. To achieve this, the CommonwealthFoundation set up an NGO Advisory Committee in 1996. The Committee’s namewas changed to the Civil Society Advisory Committee (CSAC) in 2000.The first CSAC was set up in 2000 and operated until December 2003. Itplayed a significant role in helping the Foundation to fulfil its civil society mandate byinforming both the development of a new programme and the reform of itsgovernance structure. CSAC members now sit on the Foundation’s Board ofGovernors. These achievements were built on by the second CSAC, which wasappointed in 2003 and was instrumental in planning and executing theCommonwealth People’s Forum held in Malta in 2005.In 2005 the Foundation adopted a new programme structure, with three areas of focus (Culture and Diversity, Governance and Democracy and Sustainable Development). A fundamental principle of the new approach is the need for growth through partnerships and other means. The Foundation is therefore looking to the CSAC to continue to provide information and advice, but it will also be seeking advocates and implementing partners. Show less
