The emphasis of the degree was therefore focused on training in synthetic organic chemistry, while also providing a good foundation in the other branches of chemistry. In addition I received insights into the way drugs are designed and optimised from lead compounds, their mode(s) of action and pharmacology, and how they are developed through trials and into manufacture. The chemistry was complemented by relevant courses in topics such as physiology, biochemistry and cancer chemotherapy. In my final year I undertook a major research project focusing on the direct conversion of epoxides to aziridines, in which I reviewed current syntheses of aziridine heterocycles and compared them with a new synthetic method currently being developed by the Bray Research Group.
