This class comprises an unequalled group of movers, shakers, thinkers, and doers in New York’s ever-changing foodscape.Sra is a master community composter by trade, as well as a certified Citizen Tree Pruner, Trash Academy graduate, educator, cook, gardener, farmer and community advocate. Raised in New Jersey, Sra cultivated their studies in Food Systems, Ecology, and Community Development at the University of Vermont, and returned to the tri-state area to honor their family’s roots. Sra leans on their Jewish teachings of Tikkun Olam – repairing the world, and Queer Community for care, nourishment, and perspective.Sra manages the Compost Program at East New York Farms: collecting food scraps locally from residents and community-based organizations, processing them into nutrient rich, nutritious compost. Sra built out East New York’s community composting program, providing community members with the opportunity and empowerment to compost their food scraps where city programming had not yet leaned in. Using an e-bike and trailer, Sra developed a curbside household food scrap pickup program, implemented community food scrap drop off sites, and organized a system to connect gardeners of all kinds with free clean soil and compost. Alongside the youth they mentor, they distribute compost and clean soil directly to community members and gardens in East New York, supporting gardeners in growing their own resilient food system without pesticides or chemicals. Sra operates between environmental and human wellbeing to leave this world better than they found it. Through farming, food service, education and onward, Sra intends to beat the system and mend our fragmented food and environmental networks, by connecting people to resources and uplifting those around them.
