  During my final year as an Environmental Studies student at Western State College, I was selected as an Intern with Bureau of Land Management Gunnison Field Office. Areas of sage brush were brush mowed to encourage native grass to grow which are essential for lek sites and the rearing of sage grouse chicks. My yearlong internship consisted of hiking and mapping the brush mowed areas within Gunnison Sage Grouse habitat utilizing precision GPS equipment. The GPS data was then analyzed by BLM Wildlife Biologist Sandy Borthwick and used to generate GIS maps. The GIS maps are still used today to determine likely areas to monitor breeding and population counts. Show less
