Over its five year duration, this project will provide scholarships for up to two years to 27 transfer students who are pursuing bachelor’s degrees in biochemistry, biology, chemistry, computer science, cybersecurity, environmental science, and/or mathematics. MSMU will partner with two regional community colleges, Montgomery College (MC) and Frederick Community College (FCC) to strengthen the transfer process and promote transfer student success. Community college faculty and MSMU faculty will collaborate to recruit and advise students interested in transferring to a 4-year institution. Recruitment efforts will be directed towards underrepresented minority and female students to support the goal of broadening participation in STEM. Upon acceptance in the fall of their 2nd year at community college, scholars will receive extensive pre-transfer support. At MSMU, scholars will benefit from supports and activities designed to promote retention and graduation of STEM students. The project will also educate faculty about inclusive pedagogy to help promote academic achievement of diverse students. Evaluation of the project’s activities will advance understanding of effective strategies for supporting recruitment, retention, and success of community college transfer students in STEM. Show less

Assessment of the program’s comprehensive, integrated, and ownership-focused approach emphasized effective strategies for supporting underrepresented minority (URM) and non-URM student success in STEM. Program activities were designed to reduce financial barriers, promote academic achievement, form a community of learners, and provide professional development opportunities. Scholars reported that these activities moderately or highly impacted their academic achievement and post-graduate STEM outcomes. Scholars reported a sense of identity and belonging within the STEM community, which was facilitated by authentic mentored research experiences and activities designed to build community. Scholars benefited from shared service experiences; shared learning experiences, including common sections of gateway courses and field trips to STEM job sites and graduate programs; shared faculty advisors and peer mentors; and monthly Scholar meetings addressing STEM workplace skills, culture, and ethics . Our findings have been shared with the STEM and diversity, equity, and inclusion communities through scholarly poster presentations at national conferences in 2021 (ASMCUE and NCORE). Show less
