      Upon returning home after nearly 4 years abroad, I found myself starting over. A friend of mine knew that I had developed a passion for cooking, so she suggested that I get a part-time job at Sur La Table while contemplating my next move. Within 3 months, I was promoted and on my way to Cleveland to open & run their new cooking school in a swanky shopping district on the east side. In addition to overseeing all aspects of the kitchen build-out, I also needed to quickly build a network of local independent restaurant chefs/owners, as I would be dependent on them to teach my cooking classes once the kitchen was up and running.That was a yummy year for sure, but my stint at Sur La Table was ultimately short as it turned out that even with my notoriously high energy level & the small but devoted volunteer "staff" that I had assembled from the community, the position still required inordinate hours around the clock in order to successfully coordinate, supervise and administer 4-5 programs a week.Not only did I manage all aspects of program execution, but I was also responsible for putting "derrieres in seats" as it were. The first month it usually meant sending friends and volunteers to pound the pavement. Later, however, it looked more like quarterly brochure development, press release distribution and good old-fashion networking. I would describe my whirlwind year at Sur La Table, as a boot camp-like, capstone experience in small business creation. Prior to that role, I had no previous experience in partnership-building, public relations/marketing or project management. Afterwards, however, I felt like a bona fide expert in all three areas.
