Stocked grocery shelves, frozen foods, and dairy-deli-soda-beer case, trimmed produce and stocked the produce counter, unloaded delivery trucks, bagged groceries, helped little old ladies out to their cars with their groceries, wrangled shopping carts, swept, mopped, cleaned, shoveled snow, washed the bosses’ vehicles, bagged ice blocks and ice cubes, packaged dry ice, took out trash, served as a human trash compactor (stomped down the trash in the back of the store’s garbage truck to reduce trips to the dump), and watched the life guards at the community swimming pool next door all summer long (what can I say, I was a teenage boy). • AGRA Earth and Environmental (now AMEC)

      Jun 1997 - Sept 1997
      Engineering Technician/Geotechnical Engineering Intern

Mr. Jensen served as an Engineering Materials Technician/Geotechnical Engineering Intern for the summer between completing his BS degree in Civil Engineering and beginning studies for his MS degree in Geotechnical Engineer. This was Mr. Jensen’s first real-world experience in the field of Geotechnical Engineering and Material Testing and Inspection. Mr. Jensen’s duties included monitoring earthwork (grading), performing nuclear density testing for soils and asphalt pavements, field testing of fresh concrete, and casting concrete cylinders for laboratory strength testing. Mr. Jensen was also responsible for performing laboratory testing for particle size distribution and maximum laboratory dry density (Proctor) on soils and for compressive strength testing of concrete cylinders in AGRA’s Ogden, Utah satellite laboratory. • Kleinfelder

      Mar 1999 - Feb 2000
      Staff Engineer

As a Staff Geotechnical Engineer, Mr. Jensen was responsible for conducting geotechnical field exploration programs including directing soil boring and test pit excavations, logging soils conditions encountered, collecting soil samples for laboratory testing, and monitoring CPT (cone penetrometer test) soundings. Working in a small office, Mr. Jensen was also responsible for conducting geotechnical laboratory testing of soils for strength, consolidation, hydrocollapse, expansion, particle size distribution, liquid and plastic behavior of clay soils (Atterberg limits), and in-place unit weight and moisture content. Mr. Jensen conducted geotechnical engineering analyses for spread footings, drilled shaft foundations, retaining walls, cut- and fill-slopes, and flexible (asphalt) pavement sections, and prepared geotechnical design reports and material testing and inspection reports. Mr. Jensen also gained valuable experience working as an Engineering Materials Technician when the regular staff of technicians was overbooked. This experience included monitoring earthwork (grading), performing nuclear density testing for soils and asphalt pavements, field testing of fresh concrete, casting concrete cylinders for laboratory strength testing, and inspecting paint application by the fabricator on sections of steel stairways for the ski jump venue at 2002 Salt Lake Winter Olympics.
