      The Center is home to Wesleyan University's College of East Asian Studies, a vibrant academic major and minor that enables students to gain a deep and diverse understanding of East Asian language and culture. The Center also offers many resources for the public, including a regular lecture series, tea ceremony and garden demonstrations set in its beautifully crafted Japanese tea room and garden, semi-annual exhibits, and a student-run outreach program for schools.In this student work study position, I taught calligraphy, origami, and sushi making to local students at the center's weekly cultural program, assisted with the setup of venue for weekly lecture events given by visiting East Asian Studies professors, and performed curatorial work, such as installing paintings and photography for gallery exhibitions.       Jackie Speier is the U.S. Representative for California's 14th congressional district, serving in Congress since 2008.In this internship, I assisted with administrative tasks, including documenting constituent opinions received through mail and phone calls into a database, processing large numbers of personal information to schedule tours of federal buildings and museums for constituents, researching and compiling a list of grants, and drafting congratulatory letters to grant winners.In an office project, I obtained over 250 Facebook ‘likes’ for the Congresswoman in the annual Democratic Social Media Contest. In another project, I communicated professionally with legislative staff to help gather Representative co-sponsors via phone calls, emails, and signature projects for the Filipino Veterans Fairness Act & Lackland Sex Scandal hearing. I also attended briefings and drafted memos for the 2012 U.S. China Relationship Congressional Staff Series. Show less

      Kyoto City International Foundation opened in 1989 as a center for international exchange in the Kyoto area. The center supports foreigners living in kyoto and seve as a bridge of communication with the hoal of establishing a mulicultural society. In this internship, I assisted with administrative programmatic tasks, including updating the message corners, posters, and flyer boxes for foreign residents, designing the International Student Website flyer for distribution to exchange students, translating event flyers and automatic email response notices from Japanese to English, and assisting with host family matching events for international students.I assisted with special projects, such as writing a book review in Japanese for the monthly book review program, translating articles for the bimonthly publication, Life in Kyoto, and developing and led an American cultural program for Otsu City Boy Scout’s International Culture Day.       As part of my graduate program, I assisted with the FSA Strategy, Innovation & Transformation Team on two major design projects: Lead a team of six interns to design a prototype of a new student success marketplace  Oversaw the research and interview process for journey maps for three personas: a community college transfer, a high school senior, and a high school sophomore.  Held weekly team meetings, delegating tasks, and soliciting individual updates from interns.  Used Flow Map and Adobe Photoshop to visualize a complex information architecture chart capturing the four-phase Idea, Design, Execute, and Award (IDEA) process for a pilot program to collect and implement employee ideas in order to increase employee effectiveness.  Created a journey map of the IDEA program, from first receiving the idea in an internal CRM software, i.e. SalesForce, to awarding incentives for the most innovative practices.
