      Mar 2011 - Sept 2011
      Family Nutrition Plan Intern

I spent a summer working with the Virginia Cooperative Extension's "Family Nutrition Program." During this program I was able to educate low-income children (specifically those receiving food stamps, SNAP) about healthy food alternatives and active lifestyles. Daily hands on activities included making smoothies, homemade soda and other healthy snacks with each class. My most important responsibility was to introduce the nutrition guide, "MyPlate," in order to educate children about healthy food groups and eating on a budget. I was also responsible for planning, budgeting, grocery shopping and completing paperwork for the Cooperative Extension's future research. Show less

    • Virginia Tech Adult Day Services

      Jan 2012 - May 2014
      Student Intern

I served as an Activity Leader and a Senior Companion for 20+ hours each week. The Adult Day Center follows a Rogerian "person based philosophy of care" that focuses on participants as adults with individual interests and needs. Therefore, it was my job to create and lead stimulating activities such as gardening, sing-a-longs, and cooking that encourage and reinforce the cognitive, creative, social and physical functioning of participants. I also lead Intergenerational Programs that involve the Adult Day Center and the Child Development Center for Learning and Research next door. Show less

    • Tackfully Teamed Riding Academy

      May 2013 - Aug 2013
      Recreational Therapy Aide

I spent a summer interning at Tackfully Teamed Riding Academy--a therapeutic horseback riding academy in Henry, VA. During that summer I worked under a licensed Recreational Therapist and Occupational Therapist with riders ranging in age from 5 to 85 years old. The disabilities treated at Tackfully Teamed include: Autism, ADHD, Mental Retardation, Alzheimer's Disease, Dementia, Stroke, Myotonic Muscular Dystrophy and Cerebral Palsy. As an intern I was able to assist with all horseback lessons as a "side-walker". This involved walking along side the horse and rider in the proper hand-over-thigh position to ensure the safety of each rider. I was taught exercises on horseback that increased mobility, strength and sensory input for disabilities of all kinds. My internship also allowed me to help design and create a "Sensory Trail" to help riders practice ADLs and IADLs while mounted in the natural yet muscle strengthening position of a saddle. Show less

    • Medical Facilities of America - Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation

At this skilled nursing facility, I was given the opportunity to implement evidence-based interventions with patients, create goals, and assist the OTR with treatments and documentation. I enjoyed building a rapport with clients and having to think quickly on my feet.

    • Medical Facilities of America-Raleigh Court Health and Rehabilitation

      Level Two Fieldwork Student

As a Fieldwork Level Two Student, I treated a full caseload for 9 out of 12 weeks. I was expected to meet and successfully met 75% productivity standards each week. I took over documentation for my clinical instructor's entire caseload: evaluations, progress notes, insurance updates, discharges, etc. I was able to complete evaluations and home-visits as well as supervised visits with COTAs. I was given the opportunity to collaborate with nursing, PT, speech, doctors, and families/caregivers to ensure client-centered care for each patient. During my fifth week at Raleigh Court, I was mentioned in a memorandum from William Fralin (President and CEO of Medical Facilities of America) regarding my work with a patient and her family.
