    • SLDF

      Aug 2012 - Dec 2012
      Guest Designer

I was invited by Sri Lanka’s prestigious Academy Of Design in Colombo to share my knowledge with BA Design Students and produce a range of products for the Island Craft Project in Sri Lanka’s Design Festival 2012. I explored the rich cultural traditions of Sri Lanka’s textile heritage whilst bringing awareness to its capability and commitment to sustainable and ethical practice. As part of the DFSD team my work helped to restore livelihoods in war-affected areas through design, collaborating with the fashion students and involving the skilled practice of local batik artisans. Design for Sustainable Development (DFSD) is a non-profit venture conceptualized by the Academy of Design (AOD), that forms part of the academy’s dedicated social mission. The project recognizes and realizes the role of the island’s dynamic traditional handicrafts, in the socio-economic development of Sri Lanka. Working with communities across the island, the project links the skills of practicing artisans with the growing tourist and boutique hotel markets through a process of fresh and innovative co-design and the creation of contemporary craft products.I produced two printed collections consisting of a nautical inspired batik collection of printed scarves, sarongs, bags and handmade rope jewellery for a global market exhibited at SLDF. Also collaborating with UK Designer Lucy Standing on a commissioned batik collection for Sri Lanka Airways. We liaised with artisans and local factories to meet production deadlines and helped run, organize and dress backstage at fashion shows in Galle and Colombo. The work we produced with the local batik artisans provided creative solutions and inspiration that will create a new dimension in Sri Lanka's local craft industry that I believe is fundamental in supporting Sri Lanka’s economic development in the 21st Century.
