A standard-sized 150 x 300 mm cylinder composed of pure aluminum was loaded to and maintained at a stress level comparable to very high-strength concrete (70 to 90 MPa) on each compression machine involved in the research project. This research program utilized 3-D force-imaging technology to visually observe stress distribution along the upper and lower bearing faces, and evaluated multiple factors important to compression machines, including: (1) frame longitudinal stiffness, (2) frame lateral stiffness, and (3) thickness of the compression machine's hemispherical head bearing plate. Project findings suggested that not all industry-compliant compression machines are suitable for accurate testing of standard-sized cylindrical specimens of very high-strength concrete. Show less
