Melanie is Ward Manager of Marsh Ward, a large postnatal ward at the hospital where we have worked on placement. Although Melanie is not the named mentor of all of us we would all like to nominate Melanie for this award as we feel we have all benefitted from her clinical knowledge, warm support, positive welcome and kindness whilst on placement on Marsh Ward. Melanie treats students as genuinely part of the ward team and includes them in discussions and meetings, taking account of their input, concerns and suggestions. She is warm and approachable and generously shares her clinical expertise and encourages students to fulfil their learning and potential on the ward by taking time to oversee any procedures or aspects of care that the student is undertaking. Melanie is extremely knowledgeable in terms of her clinical care and without exception treats women and babies with warmth, kindness and empathy, appearing to have 'all the time in the world' for them even when the ward is very busy. She models compassionate midwifery care to us as students. Melanie also keenly encourages final year students to shadow, observe and then undertake ward management roles and continually offers encouragement and positive suggestions for development during this process. Whether we have worked with Melanie directly or indirectly, at the end of a placement on Marsh ward because of her impact we have all learnt a huge amount and feel encouraged and positive about our capabilities as soon-to-be qualified midwifes and why it is a such a privilege to work with women and their babies Show less
