      Peer Specialist

As an active member of the Health Care for Homeless Veterans (HCHV) program, I provide peer support services to veterans with serious mental illness and substance abuse issues. Presented consumer information in outpatient and inpatient settings and served as a consumer advocate. I used my own experiences with mental illness and substance abuse to act as a role model. Administered urinalysis tests, breath tests utilizing a breath alcohol meter. During my employment I co-facilitated and facilitated groups in Transitional Residential programs where we discussed common daily living problems and ways to manage and cope with these issues. Conducted a weekly, ongoing Job Readiness classes. I provided schedules of self help groups in the community. Worked with veterans to discover their vocational strengths to match desired vocational choices where training could be provided or the correct organization was available. As an active member of the treatment team, we discussed veteran’s progress with their ongoing treatment in the Compensated Work Therapy program. Creating and saving DAP and progress notes, treatment and discharge plans, electronically using the Computerized Patient Records System. Transported veterans as needed around the Anchorage bowl for appointments, job interviews or housing search. One of my tasks was backup support for the Supported Employment Specialist, conducting site visits at Compensated Work Therapy or Transitional Work Experience work sites. I helped maintain a working relationship with work site supervisors. Verified veteran's status with the Alaska Department of Veterans Affairs, requested DD214's online, completed personal information and needs assessment forms for the Veterans Affairs central office. I referred potential clients the Domiciliary Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program and Psychosocial Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Programs. Show less
