      BostonSight PROSE Provider

Prosthetic replacement of the ocular surface ecosystem (PROSE) is a pioneering, FDA-approved treatment that can restore vision, support healing, reduce irritative symptoms, and improve quality of life for patients with complex corneal disease, especially those for whom conventional treatments have failed. The device superficially resembles an oversized contact lens but is completely different in design and manufacture— rather than touching the cornea, the device vaults over the cornea without touching any part of the cornea, restoring health to the surface and correcting any optical distortion due to corneal irregularities. Unlike scleral lenses that are mass-manufactured and can achieve only an approximate fit, each PROSE device is precisely custom-manufactured to a patient’s individual specifications in order to achieve optimal fit and comfort. PROSE devices are fit only at major medical centers with expertise in treating complex corneal disease and are manufactured at only one site in the world, the Boston Foundation for Sight. UCSF is only one of two PROSE providers in the western United States and is among approximately 16 centers world-wide.Patients with conditions such as dry eye syndrome, keratoconus, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, chronic ocular graft-versus-host disease (GVHD), Sjögren's syndrome, pellucid marginal degeneration, ocular trauma, complications of LASIK, or complications of cornea transplantation, can benefit from PROSE. PROSE treatment offers continued benefit, as defined by improved visual function and continued device wear at five years, to almost 75% of candidates with complex corneal disease. Show less
