A project I worked on this semester was finding incentives for developers in Johnston to preserve more trees. Last summer Johnston decided to update their tree ordinance. This included getting rid of ordinances that are no longer relevant and modernizing it by adding ordinances to keep healthier and more trees in Johnston. I was responsible for finding incentives for developers to keep more trees when they build. First, I learned all the benefits. I tried to find preservation incentives from cities in Iowa but we seem to have a lack of them. So I looked in places like North and South Carolina where tree preservation incentives are more common. I took the best incentives I found to a joint meeting between the Johnston Tree Board and the Planning & Zoning Commission and presented them. It was interesting to be in the meeting and to see how everyone was talking to each other to get what they want. The public was allowed to speak at the end which was also interesting to be apart of and listen to how the board members took criticism and new ideas. Pokaż mniej
