      Jul 2005 - Aug 2008
      Watersport Instructor

Sailing and windsurfing instructor (summer only). My main responsibilities as a watersports instructor were to teach both children and adults to dinghy sail, windsurf and kayak. I primarily taught children and young adults to sail at intermediate and advance levels. During my seven years of instructing I learnt many valuable skills; leadership and team work were vital skills to perform my job effectively. The constant need to teach different sports to students has dramatically improved my communication and presentation skills. Show less

    • Fraser-Nash Consultancy

      Jan 2014 - Jul 2014
      Engineer

I worked in the Noise and Vibrations group. I engineered bespoke instrumentation systems ranging from strain and motion measurements in oil and gas, to underwater acoustic arrays in pressurised current flume. I was involved in the post processing of the results from the instrumentation systems. I also helped with quality assurance in the Structures group and Fluids group. Security clearance was required for some work and an understanding of these procedures was gained.

My role was to manage and operate the Dynamic Marine Component (DMaC) test facility, link below, for the University of Exeter in Falmouth, Cornwall, UK. I was responsible for all aspects of testing including: handle all enquiries and quotes; design test configurations; operate DMaC during experiments; analysis and report on data collected; and maintain DMaC test rig. My role also included commissioning substantial improvements to the facility, such as increasing the maximum force, additional axis of motion and ISO 9001 accreditation. My job also included assisting the Renewable Energy research group by providing engineering support. I operate and manage a current flume and provided training, undertook engineering design (CAD and simulations) and manufacture tasks, and support the group with my broad knowledge of marine, mechanical and renewable engineering. Show less My role was to first install and commission a current flume to the required standards and specify a customised instrumentation system to measure fluid flow inside sealed aquaculture structures (using a tender process). Next, a systematic study of the fluid velocities through prototype aquaculture systems was completed and design graphs were generated to inform design decisions. Team work with biologists, designers and manufacturers was required. Publications:Halswell, P., Daniels, C.L. and Johanning, L., 2016.
