  Responsible for the track maintenance and renewals on the largest private industrial railway in the UK. The track at Scunthorpe utilises a wide range of rolling stock to carry a variety of products and materials around its works. From the incoming raw materials, the 500T torpedos carrying molten iron, semi finished product and finished product, they all have differing impact upon the track. With the steelworks operating on a 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, maintenance was highly critical and opportunities to carry out renewals limited. Show less

  Overall responsibility for the task of providing around the clock rail operations to move materials (an estimated 10MT Per Annum) around the steel works to support the production and manufacturing areas. This include the receipt of raw materials by rail, the movement of molten iron in 500T “torpedoes”, the transfer of semi-finished product to the mills and the outgoing finished product (rails, sections, rod coil).Operations are continuous and whilst planned, do not conform to an exact timetable. My team must be able to manage and adapt ensuring production schedules are maintained.My first team consists of members split into 5 shifts providing continuous cover over 365 days per year, utilising up to 15 Locomotives and over 200 rail wagons. My second team is that responsible for the maintenance of the rail track and consists of 22 men. This is a contracted service but overall responsibility for track condition remains with myself.
