  I worked as a researcher for UCLA's Special Collections department. That department houses all of UCLA's rare books and manuscripts -- manuscripts from the Middle Ages, books from the Renaissance, and so on. It was a grant-funded project to create a catalog of UCLA's extensive collection of books from the Aldine Press: the Ahmanson-Murphy Collection. Aldus Manutius, the founder of the press, was the inventor of italic type, developed the first paperback-sized book, and published the first European edition of Aristotle, in Greek, of course. The work involved research in Latin and Greek, and some familiarity with Italian. And the job gave me my first introduction to publishing and printing and the history of the book in general.
