  • Education

    • University College London, U. of London

      1985 - 1988
      BSc (First class Hons.) Zoology
    • University College London, U. of London

      1988 - 1991
      PhD Biochemistry

(Public Research Institute student based at Institute of Zoology, London)

  • Experience

    • Zoological Society of London (ZSL)

      Jan 1988 - Jan 1991
      PhD Student

In the 1980s, one of the major foci for the Institute of Zoology was conservation biology through improved understanding of reproductive physiology and assisted conception in exotic, endangered species. It was my very great pleasure and privilege to undertake my PhD on ovarian biochemistry, working under the supervision of Dr.Gina Webley and Prof.John Hearn, as a member of the MRC/AFRC Comparative Physiology Research Group. More than 30 years later, I still continue to collaborate with members of that team, now based at different universities. Show less

    • Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine

      Oct 1991 - Sept 2000

After 2 post-doctoral positions in the Department of Biochemistry & Chemistry at RFHSM, I was appointed to a lectureship during which my primary role was the pre-clinical training of undergraduate medical (MBBS) students and intercalated students taking the BSc in Molecular Medicine. While adapting to this new role in higher education, I continued my ongoing research into the medical significance of cortisol metabolism in the ovary, and began to diversify this research programme to encompass other tissues (specifically the testis, placenta and kidney). I also developed a parallel research programme returning to the topic of my PhD and investigating the regulation and roles for ovarian prostaglandin synthesis / metabolism. Show less On completing my PhD, I began my post-doctoral research into glucocorticoid metabolism and fertility in a 2 year post at the RFHSM funded by Birthright (now Wellbeing of Women): the research charity of the Royal College of Obstetrics & Gynaecology. I continued my research into the regulation and medical significance of ovarian cortisol metabolism on a second grant funded by the Wellcome Trust. In my second post-doc position, I had residential training visits to both the University of Edinburgh (Western General Hospital; working with Prof.Jonathan Seckl & Prof.Chris Edwards) and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre in Dallas, Texas (working with Prof.Evan Simpson). • Lecturer in Biochemistry

        Oct 1994 - Sept 2000
      • Post-Doctoral Research Fellow

        Oct 1991 - Sept 1994
    • University College London

      Sept 2000 - Jun 2005
Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology

Following the merger of the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine and UCL Medical School (to create the Royal Free & University College Medical School), I became a member of the Department of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at UCL where I was promoted from Lecturer to Senior Lecturer. At UCL, I continued my research in the field of endocrine biochemistry, specifically the medical significance of cortisol metabolism in a range of tissues, primarily with respect to reproduction and fertility. I also expanded my undergraduate teaching portfolio; in addition to leading aspects of the undergraduate MBBS curriculum and intercalated BSc degrees (Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine), I developed roles in the second and particularly the third/final year of the BSc degree programmes (in Biochemistry and in Molecular Biology). • St George's, University of London

      Jul 2005 - Aug 2013
Head of Graduate School / Deputy Dean of Education & Reader in Reproductive Science

To complement the strong portfolio of undergraduate teaching which I had developed at UCL, on joining SGUL in 2005, I elected to focus on postgraduate education. Having initially been appointed as a divisional Postgraduate Co-ordinator and then Deputy Head of the Graduate School / Associate Dean for Postgraduate Taught (PGT) Courses, I was appointed as Head of the Graduate School / Deputy Dean of Education in 2011. In that role, I had strategic responsibility for the Graduate School at SGUL and oversaw the development of both the PGT portfolio and research degree programmes, aligned to the educational and research missions of the university. I was an active member of the university's Senior Executive (the Principal's Advisory Group) as well as the Quality Assurance and Enhancement Committee (QAEC) and the Strategic Planning and Resources Committee (SPARC).
