I also provide resources and support to the Kidz First Centre for Youth Health team, and wider Mental Health Services at Counties Manukau Health. WhirinakiWhirinaki is the Counties Manukau health service responsible for supporting the mental health of children aged 0-17, as well as their whaanau/families and communities. The majority of staff working in these teams are clinicians, including doctors, nurses, psychologists, social works, occupational therapists and other trained professionals. These clinicians provide support for young people who are referred to their service, including one-on-one and group therapies. They also provide advice for GPs, schools and other health professionals in the area to help them manage mental health concerns. This service is made up of a number of teams, each specialising in a different age rage, culture or level of need. While primarily a youth orientated service, they also provide mental health service to adults, including women/families with maternal mental health concerns, and young adults with the early symptoms of psychosis. Key tasks involved in this role include:Supporting the development of a variety of service improvement projects.Accessing and analysing research, data and other resources as requested by management and other staff.Developing resources to ensure effective information sharing and access across Whirinaki and Kidz First Centre for Youth Health services.       Youth MHFA Aotearoa course is a two-day, face-to-face workshop that teaches adults how to provide initial support to a young person (aged 11 to 18) who may be experiencing a mental health challenge or crisis.How to recognise the signs and symptoms of common mental health challenges in young people.How to respond to an emerging or worsening mental health challenge, and assist a young person until professional help is received or the crisis resolves.How to have an open, supportive conversation with a young person about their mental health.How to use our practical, five-step ALGEE mental health action plan, so you have a clear process to follow, and can encourage a young person towards professional help and other supports.Youth MHFA workshops cover a range of topics including depression, anxiety, eating disorders, psychosis, problematic substance abuse, non-suicidal self-injury, suicidal thoughts and behaviours, panic attacks, traumatic events and other situations.The evidence-based programme is backed by robust research, and the Aotearoa New Zealand adaptation was informed by people in the Māori, Pacific and rainbow communities, those with lived experience, and clinical advisors.Attendees will receive a Youth MHFA workshop manual which has been specially adapted for Aotearoa New Zealand.
