The research emphasizes on the issue of urban design and place making. It employs a qualitative approach in which the researcher examined a significant amount of regeneration related documents, numerous field visits, and conducted a number of focus interviews with the key stakeholders. The study also examined a number of key areas: The impact of economic globalization & urban competitiveness on the process waterfront regeneration; The role played by urban design, contemporary urban architecture and place making in shaping the urban environment and mediating between the interest of different stakeholders; To role of culture and built heritage and how that has shaped the city urban identity.
