      Jun 2013 - Dec 2013

In the work study position I worked in the Center for Multicultural and Service Initiatives (CMSI) where my primary job was to plan and organize community service events for students. Marketing for events is what I spent the majority of my time doing. I would recruit students to go on events, and created fliers using Photoshop and Microsoft Publisher then distribute them on campus and mass e-mailings. Other task included outreach to community organizations to find volunteer opportunities for students that were interested. I was in the student organization that is a part of the CMSI called BC Serves. Here I worked with other students to plan the event the CMSI was putting on. We would encourage students to get involved in the community and gain experience by planning and participating in events. If any task were left that nobody volunteered for I would do them during my work study hours. My senior year it was interesting because a few other upper classmen and women and I acted as mentors for the freshmen to help show them what it took to run these events. When you teach others what you do it helps you go through the improvement process. We gained another perspective from new members that added to what we already had in place. Being in the BC Serves I formed some great friendships, and learned all the little details that go into planning for an event. Working with others and how to motivating others to accomplish our goals are the main tools that I gained from this position. Show less

      Jan 2014 - Apr 2014
      Internship

KEIR Manufacturing is a business to business manufacturer in the wire industry. They sell 3 different types of products: abrasives, wear resistant ceramics, and flyer bows. I worked in each of these departments to learn about the products, and the processes that go into making them. Working in the department I built relationships with my co-workers, and had to use clear communications and ask any questions to keep mistakes to a minimum. Making, and learning from mistakes was expected. These products are an interesting niche, and working on them makes me look at wires completely different now. For the last month I worked in the sales and marketing department. I gained valuable experience learning how to navigate a new database, and meeting the needs of our customers. The timing for this internship was perfect. When I first started some of the orders for the abrasives department had been increased to where they were running behind. With me being added to the team we were able to get the orders out at a faster rate.in getting the order out on time. In April the sales and marketing department went to a trade show in Germany. I was able to learn how to do the sales in time to be able to help out in the sales department. KEIR manufacturing gave me more responsibility that I had expected. Through this internship I gained many skills, and confidence that has transitioned into what I am doing now and I the future. Show less

    • Gwynn Valley

      May 2014 - Aug 2014
      Summer Camp Counselor

Gwynn Valley is a summer camp for kids ages 5-15. I was on main camp where we had kids anywhere from 5-12. Another counselor and I lived in a cabin of 8 boys from the ages of 10-12. We sometimes had a staff in training where we had to mentor. Trying to get 8 10-12 year old boys organized is similar to herding cats. They all go in different directions, and you always need to be alert. We had to make sure they had appropriate clothing for their activities, and that they were ready on time. We had to create an environment where they could work together to form friendships and enjoy their summer vacation. We helped solve and defuse any conflicts that arose. I learned to treat the campers not the way they acted, but to their potential, and to push them outside of their comfort zone to grow. As lifeguards we led groups of campers on creek hikes, canoeing lessons, tubing trips, and waterfront activities. We explained the rules to campers, and were trained to react to any situations that may occur. Once again we had to stay vigilant at all times to make sure everyone is safe, and pay close attention to our trainings in case we had to use them in a situation. Working at Gwynn Valley prepared me for Club Nova by learning how to form relationships. These relationships brought the excitement that made camp a care free place where you could be yourself, and find what you enjoy doing. Show less
