Wet lab research performed in Dr. Mary Konsolaki's genetics lab. We used a transgenic fruit fly model of Alzheimer's disease to study the effects of genetic mutations that impact the rate of beta amyloid plaque formation in the brain. Each experiment started by breeding a population of mutant fruit flies in which the expression of a gene involved in beta amyloid production or clearance was selectively up- or down-regulated. Next, behavioral patterns were observed during the fly life cycle and correlated against posthumous microscopic and biochemical analyses (e.g. ELISA, Western blotting) of beta amyloid levels in brain tissue. Results for the mutant flies were compared to those for wild-type flies to determine the effects of amplifying or knocking out the gene of interest. Show less

Research in Dr. Yana Bromberg's bioinformatics lab, with a focus on the following problem: there is a wealth of genetic information locked up in the free text of the genetics and genomics literature. This information is relatively inaccessible, and cannot be queried or searched as one would an online database. To address this, I annotated a sample of genetics/genomics research papers to build a labeled dataset of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) mentions. This dataset was used to train a natural language processing algorithm to read through research papers, automatically identify mentions of SNPs in the free text, and categorize them into an online database for improved ease-of-access. Research in Dr. Rajendra Morey's lab in the Duke Brain Imaging & Analysis Center: (1) I was project lead for a study in which we attempted to design a system that could objectively diagnose anxiety episodes using data collected by a wearable device. To achieve this, I developed a cross-platform mobile app using C#, Xamarin, and Amazon Web Services. The app interfaced with the wearable device and a Cloud-based machine learning algorithm to continuously monitor the patient's cardiac and respiratory status and detect changes in emotional state in real-time.(2) I also contributed to Dr. Morey's neuroimaging work by using Docker to containerize the software pipelines used to pre-process functional MRI data, thereby resolving dependency and operating system issues.
