      Detective sergeant (public protection unit)

I was initially leading a team of 20 Officers over 2 sites, to investigate and safeguard victims and families from domestic abuse and violence. I then progressed to oversee child abuse investigations and adult safeguarding cases, with a team of 15 Officers and civilian staff. In both of these roles it was vital to develop a rapport to gain the trust of victims of all ages and vulnerabilities, in order to conduct effective victim and suspect interviews resulting in quality testimony and evidence. As the areas most experienced child protection detective, I attended and supervised investigations on every child death (SUDI). By implementing protocol and using my experience, I was able to make difficult decisions regarding whether there was any criminality involved. My expertise was also used in strategy meetings, child protection case conferences, Local Authority Designated Officer meetings and Best Interest meetings. I also chaired multi-agency risk assessment conferences. The role involved leading complex and protracted investigations, critically reviewing cases, preparing reports and giving evidence in various courts. Key achievements in this position included: - On the project team implementing the country’s first-ever Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub, which was nationally recognised as good practice, and received very positive feedback from OFSTED as the MASH manager - Prioritising and delegating cases according to risk and statutory deadlines, consistently achieving positive outcomes despite reduced staff numbers and increased demand - Successfully removing hundreds of children from abusive situations Show less
