      Cabin Counsellor

In this summer role, I supervised groups of 10-15 campers between the ages of 4 and 7, along with one or two co-counsellors, as well as several campers of mixed ages on a bus to and from camp every day. Using my interpersonal communication skills, I was quickly able to foster personal connections with by cabin and bus campers. With my co-counsellors, we collaboratively planned cabin activities that incorporated social skills and teamwork abilities, so that campers in our cabin could form a close connection to one another. We also created structured routines to get our campers to and from activities promptly and reinforce positive behaviour between everyone in the cabin. Show less

      Sept 2021 - Dec 2023

During the school year, I held one-on-one appointments on Google Meet for students who wanted some assistance with their writing assignments. I provided them with tips regarding the planning, researching, structuring, and writing of their work. I used strong intercultural communication skills by differentiating my tutoring instructions to meet each individual student's learning preferences, whether this was relying on oral communication, written communication, or visual communication. When necessary, I also shared and promoted helpful writing resources from Nool, the school's website containing tips on math, science, writing, and study skills. Overall, throughout every appointment, I offered a positive and encouraging work environment by scaffolding for the purpose of enabling students to apply the tips they have received from me to independent work done outside of our appointments. Show less In the 2021/2022 school year, I was responsible for mentoring a small group of first-year peer tutors by facilitating individual and group meetings throughout each semester. During these meetings, I would scaffold mentees through the process of creating SMART goals (specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound). I would also take time to advise mentees regarding how to handle new or difficult tutoring situations that they have either been through or anticipate going through in the year. Before each meeting, I would send each mentee an agenda of our meeting to help them prepare for what to expect; during each meeting, I would take notes to add onto "meeting minutes" that would be sent after the meeting to (1) remind attending mentees what we spoke about and (2) allow mentees who could not attend to update themselves on what was missed. To help me prepare for the role, I completed various online training modules surrounding topics including (but not limited to) active learning strategies, diversity and inclusion, Universal Design for Learning, boundaries, cognitive biases, and conflict resolution. Youth Group Co-Facilitator & Digital Media Assistant

In this role, I assisted FERN's clinician and program coordinator in facilitating weekly Youth Group discussions with a group of 8-10 teenagers with intellectual and developmental disabilities. These conversations would primarily involve communication skills, such as interpersonal communication and persuasion. We would also be sure to add in time for open discussion about what each participant was looking forward to that week. In addition to this, I used Canva to create twice-weekly social media posts on Facebook and Instagram; these would promote future Youth Group and other FERN initiatives, as well as recap past Youth Group topics. I would also engage with community members on Instagram by replying to comments and posting on stories with interactive games, such as "This or That?" Finally, I accessed FERN's website back pages on Squarespace to promote their programs, events, and philosophies. Show less

      Unit Head - Munchies

During the summer, I work as a Unit Head, supervising a group of about 9-13 cabin counsellors who will be working with campers ages 4-5. Each cabin has about 12 campers, and I supervise counsellors for four of these cabins. My role is to provide a warm welcome to new and returning staff members during my facilitation of staff training, including topics such as behaviour management, cabin routines, and activity planning. Once the camp season begins and campers are attending, I work closely with my staff, as well as my supervisor (called a Division Head) to troubleshoot any cabin or unit issues that may be occurring. When necessary, I also make phone calls to parents of campers who may be experiencing challenges. Together, we exchange ideas to create a solution, and I communicate this to my staff and supervisor.
