Throughout the summer we trained new cadets the knowledge, skills and abilities that they need to be successful in the Army Cadet program. We had three separate two-week courses of approximately 25 cadets on each (total of approximately 75 pictured below) that we trained. As they neared the completion of their course we observed the increased confidence that they had, applying their newfound skills and enjoying the companionship with their newfound friends who were sharing these new experiences with them. Cadets came primarily from Nunavut, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Northwest Territories, Alberta, British Columbia and Yukon. During my time there I was asked to be the RCMP's guest of honour to accept the opening Salute from the Commander of the Musical Ride at the performance in Whitehorse on August 13th.The General Training Course (Army) provides cadets who have recently joined the Cadet Program an introductory training experience where they will participate in a variety of activities from each specialty, to include Drill and Ceremonial, Music, Marksmanship and Expedition. Cadets applying for this course should have successfully completed the Green Star. Näytä vähemmän

Yukon Fish and Game
Jan 2019 - Jan 2019SupervisorOur fish ladder and near-by fish hatchery are helping to ensure the survival of the Yukon River's Chinook salmon run. The world’s longest wooden fish ladder helps migrating chinook (aka king) salmon on the final leg of their epic journey. As young smolts, they migrate downstream to the Bering Sea. After three to five years, they reenter the Yukon River and begin the two-month 3,200-kilometer (nearly 2,000-mile) swim back to their home waters. The lucky ones—a tiny percentage—will make it to spawn and die there. This 366-meter (1,200-foot) chute allows the salmon to skirt the Whitehorse Dam and avoid its turbines.I work as a supervisor at the interpretation centre in the fish ladder, where visitors can view fish through the underwater window and learn more about the salmon and other species from displays inside the building and the viewing platforms above the Yukon River. We have underwater cameras and TV monitors so that people can view the migrating salmon and freshwater fish at the centre or even via their home or office computer.I also had the opportunity to work at the Fish Hatchery, located just downstream from the fishladder. The hatchery accommodates the rearing of fresh water species including chinook salmon, arctic char, kokanee salmon, and lake, rainbow and bull trout. The freshwater fish are used to stock pothole lakes in the southern Yukon. Each year, about 60 female and 120 male Chinook are removed from the fishway. Eggs and sperm are collected and mixed. The fertilized eggs are incubated over the winter and the young fish (fry) are released the following spring into streams such as Michie and Wolf Creeks in the Yukon River system. Before the fish are set free, I ensure that they have their adipose fin clipped so that a tiny coded wire could be inserted into their nose cartilage. This procedure identifies the stock, date and location of release and helps biologists track the number of salmon that return to the spawning grounds as adults. Näytä vähemmän
