  Instrument and Control Engineer

  Between my second and third year at university I completed a student placement at the Humber Refinery with Phillips 66. My time on placement was split into two main roles: Instrument Engineer with the maintenance department and Industrial Control Systems Engineer. Some of the tasks completed in each role are listed below. Instrument Engineer:• Acquired quotes and performed design work on P&IDs and loop diagrams for the replacement of a compressor temperature monitoring system to enhance reliability. • Reviewing the Process Hazard Analysis and Layer of Protection Analysis documents to correct the maintenance plans and classification of SIS, IPL, ROL, SOL and SGD equipment • Hands on experience with analyser and instrument technicians• Liaised with vendors into the upgrade of a corroding control valve on the Alkylation unit.Industrial Control System Engineer:• Writing a detailed planned preventive maintenance (PPM) procedure for the maintenance of Honeywell’s Fail-Safe Controller’s (FSC) • Creating testing scripts for all function blocks used on FSC’s to improve the efficiency and accuracy of offline testing for Safety Instrumented System’s (SIS)• Carrying out simulation testing for FSC modifications ahead of a turnaround• Modification of logic and implantation of changes on Programmable Logic Controller’s (PLC)Both roles involved working with people within a variety of different roles and disciplines, for example engineers, operators and technicians, from mechanical, process, electrical and safety backgrounds.
