      Honors South Africa Sustainability Study Abroad

      The Honors South Africa Sustainability Study Abroad trip was a service-learning spring-extended course, for which we spent three weeks in Africa in May 2019. Students in the class were assigned interdisciplinary projects encompassing a variety of fields of study, including engineering, health science, and zoology. They were implemented in two locations at which we stayed while abroad: the Nkosinathi Community Centre in the Intabazwe township near Harrismith and the Nambiti Private Game Reserve near Ladysmith. - Led the rhinoceros dehorning project, an anti-poaching effort to protect the two endangered rhinoceros species indigenous to South Africa- Raised funds to hire a wildlife veterinarian and conducted research on the controversial topic of rhinoceros dehorning, including insight into alternative anti-poaching actions, the debate surrounding the subject, and general information on South African wildlife- Presented research findings to classmates, donors, and other stakeholders- Provided support with teammates' projects, most notably: • replacing batteries on the community centre's solar panel system • constructing a fence around a recently-acquired plot of land for a new school • setting up camera traps to track leopards' location and activity in the reserve Show less

      Contemporary Projects in Manufacturing Aerospace Platforms Study Abroad in Brazil

      Contemporary Projects in Manufacturing Aerospace Platforms was a spring course for which our team of 10 mechanical and aerospace engineers spent 10 days in Brazil over spring break in 2020. - Toured Central Florida aircraft companies such as Embraer - Melbourne, Piper Aircraft, and Aerojet Rocketdyne. - Visited Embraer's headquarters in São Paulo, a particle accelerator laboratory, and Instituto Tecnológico de Aeronáutica in Brazil.- Investigated the unconventional option of using vinyl wrapping to decorate aircraft exteriors as part of a semester-long individual research project, which included calculating an estimation of the cost reduction and performing an analysis of the expected long-term impact of this new method- Presented research findings to representatives from Embraer during our final class meeting; one of three students selected for this opportunity Show less
