  The Science Academies' of India (IASc-INSA-NASI) offered Summer Fellowships to enable students to carry research. It aimed at motivating student talent in the field of Science, Medicine and Engineering. The candidate works in consultation with the assigned guide on a research topic.I was selected in the 'Material Science' stream in the fellowship. I was guided by: Dr. R. Sunder, Director – BiSS Research and Former Deputy Director – NAL & Visiting Scientist - US Air Force.The project aimed to compare standard & non-standard (Constraint) LCF specimens according to ASTM E 606 on a digitally controlled Servo-Hydraulic Machinery. For, the same material, variation in the mechanical properties of grooved and smooth specimen has been studied. Show less

  Involved in a project titled 'Characterization of Fractured Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics (CFRP)'. This was part of the academic curriculum for a bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from VTU, India. I was the team leader for a group of four and was guided by Dr. M A Venkataswamy, Deputy Director & Scientist F, Materials Science Division, NAL, India. Objective of this project was to characterize the fractured CFRP using SEM and hence study the Fractography (Failure Modes) of the composites under various mechanical loadings (Tension, Compression and Flexural). The typical morphology of fracture surfaces was studied at different loading conditions to identify the principle fractures features. Efforts have been made to correlate the fracture surface characteristics to the failure mode. Show less

  Guide: Dr. D Roy Mahapatra, Assistant Professor, Laboratory for Integrative Multiscale Engineering Materials and Systems (IMEMS) Department of Aerospace Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, BangaloreThe major project I worked on was "Noise Transmission Performance of Patterened Honeycomb Panel". The aim of this project was to study the noise attenuation characteristics of pattern filled aluminium honeycomb panel (cellular solids) to explore the bandgap phenomenon. A parametric study on the filler pattern (bare, line type, flower type & diagonal type) and different damping material (Polyurethane foam and Expanded Polyethylene foam) used in preparing the filler pattern was carried out in order to characterize the overall frequency response and noise transmission behavior.I also worked on "Development of Smart Composites with embedded Piezo-electric Transducers (PZT)". The failure and damages in Composites can be reduced by real-time monitoring technique such as using distributed sensors (like PVDF) on the structure while in use. Parameters (Stretching, Poling, Electroding etc.) for the preparation of Polyvinylidine Fluoride (PVDF) films has been standardized to get the beta phase PVDF for structural, mechanical, surface, electrical properties and transducer applications, which are being continued in my guide's lab.
