I participated in a 40 hour internship while in High School, and had the opportunity to shadow Dr. Albert Triana and Dr. Joseph Triana during their in-office procedures and cesarean sections. I also took the blood pressure of patients under supervision. I spoke to patients in both Spanish and English. During summer '23, I continued to shadow to the doctors at Bayshore Women's Healthcare. After receiving my phlebotomy license I was also allowed to draw blood from patients during their visits. I observed a robotic hysterectomy, c-sections, in-office procedures like exams and IUD placements, etc. Show less

I shadowed a total of 20 hours with Dr.Armando Hernandez-Reyes. I was able to see in-office procedures at his office and surgeries at Coral Gable Hospital. I observed polyp removals, Transvaginal ultrasounds, telemedicine, patient checkups, Intrauterine Insemination, myomectomies, etc. During this experience, I learned of Dr. Hernandez-Reyes passion for teaching as he has students from UM rotate with him and is constantly teaching patients online about fertility. This made me realize the importance of good communication skills and being well-rounded in areas other than science. Show less

      May 2023 - Jun 2023
      Summer Intern

Shadowing Dr. Hernandez, Dr. Pagnussat, and other employees allowed me to experience Phase 1 research through a non-traditional lens of medicine. First, I shadowed the screening process where they interview patients taking their medical history, performing physical examinations, and reviewing informed consent forms. Then, I rotated with quality control, study coordinators, billing, management, the lab, and medics. I was able to be on the floor watching blood draws using a catheter and with a device called Tasso. In the laboratory, I learned how to operate a centrifuge machine, record data, ship samples, and pipette plasma into their respective tubes for later analysis. While I was there I witnessed an adverse reaction to an injection site and learned what pharmaceutical companies and study sites had to do when a study had to be halted. I learned that communication and teamwork are an integral part of research as there are many moving parts. From creating flowsheets to taking vitals to analyzing data, every individual took part in making sure that the patients remained safe while undergoing first in-human drug trials. Show less

      Shadow

I shadowed Dr. Alfredo Hernandez for a day (total 10 hrs 6:30-4:30) and observed procedures like colonoscopies and endoscopies, ERCP procedure, etc. I also witnessed his patient interactions as he consulted in the ER at Mercy Hospital. During my time with him, I was inspired by his efforts to deliver the best standard of care as he explained to me that he implemented a way of making sure all the gastroenterologists that worked with him delivered the best of their care. His system has the nurses taking note of how long the Doctor takes to pull out during a colonoscopy/endoscopy and compares it to his discovery or tumors/polyp rates. I learned the importance of taking your time in order to look thoroughly at a patient. Show less
