  SANAE 49 Senior Meteorologist

  I was selected as a member of the SANAE 49 over-wintering expedition to the national base in Antarctica, subsequent to my successful application for the position of Senior Meteorologist. I considered this to be a once in a lifetime opportunity and was confident that even though the position was not in my field of expertise, I could learn the necessary skills and theory required to fulfil the job requirements. I spent 14 months in Antarctica as part of the ten-man team; we were responsible for the operation and maintenance of the SANAE IV base and its scientific infrastructure. As the Senior Meteorologist, I saw to the operational management of the meteorological office at the base. My mandate included daily meteorological observations, data processing and monthly reporting. I was also responsible for driving the maintenance and repairs on respective systems – when systems failed, I had to employ my personal faultfinding skills as well as work with the engineers on my team to resolve the issues. Moreover, as part of the team, I assisted in the logistic preparations, cargo work and other operational affairs that were required to keep things going at the base. Show less
