It has greatly enhanced my understanding of how people work including myself with many engaging theories. I have also through role play and placement been able to expand my practical counselling skills. These range from basic skills such as summarising, paraphrasing and active listening to more advanced skills such as interpretation, working with transference and appropriately challenging a client. Through my time with the degree I feel I have developed my confidence greatly but also have become a much more balanced person through the use of boundaries as one example. Even exploring theories such as existential has shaped my approach to life and is playing out in my responses to situations life brings my way. Show less

    • Sainsbury's

      Oct 2013 - Oct 2021

I was a manager in multiple stores of the highly growing online departments at the tail end of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a manager I not only needed skills to be able to schedule, manage risk and sort HR related issues but managed people and all that entails that. I throughly enjoyed coaching colleagues to be the best version of themselves and helping colleagues who needed additional support through signposting to the various services the company offered. Through this experience I realised that I would want to explore being a counsellor as this part of the role is what engaged me the most. Show less

      Student Mentor

As a student mentor I organise and facilitate appointments with new students. I use my active listening skills to great use to understand what the student needs help with. I am able to explore the many options for help students have at university and will signpost them directly to the specific support they need. I also use my warmth and empathy to allow the student to not only feel heard but to be understood.

      Trainee Counsellor

As a trainee counsellor I see self-referred clients for Suffolk Mind. I use all of my basic counselling skills such as active listening, self-awareness, reflection and relationship building. Additionally I use more advanced skills such as working with transference and interpretation. To aid me in this role I use supervision, group supervision and journalling to aid my reflection and to practice ethically. This placement has greatly enhanced my knowledge as the real world client work cements my theoretical understanding. It has greatly improved my confidence as I have the support system around me to support my learning and growth. My self-awareness has further expanded as working with clients and being open to the experience with them, I learn more about myself. Show less
