  My initial introduction into construction projects began here. I supported construction teams in the site development of many large civil construction projects throughout Oregon. I worked as a general laborer as well as a heavy equipment operator. These role allowed me to fully understand the intricacies of construction elements, plan reading and review, phases, and terminology. I collaborated with contractors from numerous other project disciplines to support an overall successful project construction effort.   I continued to work as a general laborer as well as a heavy equipment operator, and grew in my understanding of larger scale construction projects. I supported my team and general contractors in the site development of multiple large housing development communities. My understanding of construction projects grew to include knowledge such as large scale site grading and planning for installation of site and home utilities for over 200 new homes. My ability to see opportunities and challenges within the repetitive plans made me a trusted part of the team and someone who was seen as dedicated to quality of the project and safety of the team.   In my role with AHBL, I advanced my knowledge and experience of construction projects further and coupled that with my structural engineering education. I supported and led the project design team to develop the structural calculations and drawings for a plethora of small to medium structure types including homes, warehouses, and office buildings. My prior work as a general laborer and heavy equipment operator allowed me to bring insights and solutions to my team proactively.   I was able to build on my experience with AHBL, and worked as the Lead for the project design teams in the development of structural calculations and drawings for a large variety of medium to large structures. These included mid-rise buildings, schools, and fire stations. I also served as the main point of contact for customer communications, alignment of stakeholder expectations, and planning for the project design team. In this role, I was able to bring together my passion for project management, engineering, and my dedication to servant leadership.   My team and I directly support Tacoma Power’s strategic initiative to Improve Operational Efficiency. The Project Management Office has matured Tacoma Power’s project management discipline by providing resources and a unified approach to projects ranging in scope from $5,000 to $35 Million. My team and I develop processes and training programs, and introduce tools to the utility to enable all members of project teams to be successful from project inception to closeout. We rolled out a cohesive project management training curriculum tailored to each level of the organization (from the C-suite to the individual contributor). Show less My team and I provided engineering project support to various sections in Tacoma Power (specifically the Generation section and Transmission & Distribution sections).. We assisted in the civil and structural development of large public utility construction projects including substations, powerhouses, hatcheries, offices, warehouses, and communication towers. The ability to be involved from project conception through project closeout is a rare opportunity, and provided me opportunity to be involved in design, permitting, specifications, bid solicitation and award (RFPs, RFQs, RFBs), construction management, project management, quality control/assurance, payment processing, and formal project close out procedures. Without having hands-on experience, projects could have been susceptible to scope creep, cost increase, or schedule changes. Show less
