  • Experience

    • Wayne State University

      May 1991 - Jan 1999
      Development Officer

My first taste of fundraising was as a student volunteer for the WSU phonathon, and my first full-time job was as office assistant to the director of annual giving. She must have been a great teacher, since I grew to ultimately direct that program and development services as well. Along the way, I learned database management, program analysis, corporate campaigns, volunteer recruitment and management, direct mail, phonathons, telemarketing, special events, major gifts, and staff supervision at the elbow of many capable professionals who generously shared their expertise. • Winds ex odeon Chamber Wind Ensemble

      Jan 1992 - Jan 1996
      Musician

After repeatedly crossing paths in musical theater productions, Ken, Judy, Harold and I decided to form a partnership as a working ensemble of wind players for "pit" orchestras able to cover all the reed parts (flutes, clarinets, saxophones, oboe, and bassoon). It wasn't long before we were out of the theater (hence "ex odeon") and onto the bandstand as featured performers at the Michigan Renaissance Festival, WDET Music Festival, Noel Night, and other events in metropolitan Detroit.

    • University of Michigan-Dearborn

      Jan 1999 - Jan 2001
      Director of Major Gifts

When the former head of development at WSU ask me to join her at UM-Dearborn, I jumped at the chance to be part of her team again. Working on behalf of the liberal arts was an added bonus.I was entrusted with designing and implementing the first major gifts program for the College of Arts, Science, and Letters, and launching a capital campaign for its new academic building. This gave me the opportunity to master case development and testing, donor prospecting, campaign planning, awareness building, and cultivating and soliciting lead gifts. My most interesting task at UM-D was to lay the groundwork with internal and community constituents to create the Center for Arab American Studies on campus. • Michigan Colleges Alliance

      Feb 2001 - Jan 2007
      Vice President for Advancement

MCA (at the time, Michigan Colleges Foundation) attracted me because of its dedication to the liberal arts and focus on fundraising. I quickly learned what it must be like to be a small business owner, as my responsibilities included every aspect of the day-to-day operations. My fundraising duties included major gifts, grant writing, and annual volunteer-based campaigns in 12 cities in Michigan on behalf of 14 independent colleges. This gave me the opportunity to get to know many great people, institutions and communities throughout the state.I played a major role in developing and securing funding for new programs in multi-campus collaboration, pre-college preparation, and workforce development. Still, scholarship programs were the most significant part of our work, and I am proud to have helped over 4,000 students through college. Show less

    • Oakland Community College

      May 2019 - Oct 2022

This position incorporated my responsibilities as head of philanthropy for OCC into a more comprehensive role, nurturing and shepherding key relationships for the College. As head of the Advancement team, I guided philanthropy, corporate and foundation relations, and community and government relations.I am particularly proud of the strong relationships we formed with our local civic and community leaders who understand the importance of education and training for a thriving economy. We had some fun along the way, welcoming to our campuses city, county, state and national leaders - including the First Lady - for important activities and events. Show less After ten years as a consultant, Oakland Community College drew me back to my roots in higher education. Serving the OCC Foundation gave me opportunity to connect generous donors and sponsors to opportunities that empower students to succeed and advance our community - a powerful and attractive part of serving the cause of education. With its volunteer board and talented staff, I led the Foundation to its most successful period to date. Together we broke fundraising records, nearly doubled our investments, and increased planned giving commitments. Most importantly, the Foundation had measurable impact on student persistence, completion and success. During my tenure we awarded more than 3,500 scholarships, relaunched the emergency assistance fund for greater speed and impact, and saved students hundreds of thousands of dollars through an ongoing Open Educational Resources project.Above all, I treasure the great relationships I formed with my fellow OCC employees, partners, retirees, donors and sponsors.
