Researcher at Biopixel Oceans Foundation and Postdoctoral Research Fellow at James Cook University

  • Education

    • James Cook University

      -
Doctor of Philosophy - PhD Natural Sciences (Marine Biology)
    • University of Miami

      2013 - 2017
  • Experience

    • White Shark Projects

      May 2014 - Jun 2014
      Volunteer

      - Behavioral observations of great white sharks in South Africa. From the boat as well as underwater- Photo identification of individual sharks using scars and other unique appearance features

    • Universidad San Francisco de Quito

      Aug 2015 - Dec 2015
      Volunteer

      - Assisted in catching and drawing blood from 3 species of sea turtles (including Eretmochelys imbricata, Chelonia mydas, Lepidochelys olivacea)- taking observational data on social behavior in Scalloped hammerheads while scuba diving

    • Shark Research at the University of Miami

      Apr 2016 - May 2017
      Intern

During my time as a research intern at Dr. Neil Hammerschlag's shark lab, I generally assisted with field work and data collection, this included:- catching and tagging of sharks (including acoustic tags and satellite tags)- measuring sharks, taking stable isotope and DNA samples- community outreach to push shark conservation(shark species included: Great hammerhead, tiger shark, lemon shark, bull shark, blacktip shark, nurse shark)

    • Bimini Biological Field Station Foundation

      Jan 2017 - Sept 2019
      Student Project

During my time at the field station I did a research project on juvenile lemon shark personality. I used active and passive acoustic tracking to see how different shark personalities affect refuge use at high tide within mangrove systems. I also trained and coordinated volunteers for this projectAdditionally, I helped with all other aspects of scientific research and outreach at the Bimini Biological Field station, including: longline sets, tagging and measuring sharks (tiger sharks, lemon sharks, bull sharks, blacknose sharks, Atlantic sharpnose sharks, nurse sharks, blacktip sharks), public tours of the station, stingray catching and PIT tagging, as well as population assessments of local elasmobranchs. • James Cook University

      Sept 2019 - Aug 2023
      PhD Candidate

I am studying the in the biological and environmental drivers of large-scale movements and habitat use in sharks and rays. My goal is to develop a multi-method approach that helps to make sense of complex patterns of individual differences within species and how these patterns of habitat use are related to things like climate change, diet, environmental factors, and genetics.

      Jun 2021 - now
      Researcher

In this joint role I am conducting multiple research, conservation and management projects across Australia. These include shark and crocodile research and management, fisheries research on commercially important fish and their essential habitat associations, aquatic and terrestrial habitat assessments, and endangered species consultancy work at mine sites. My work requires extensive stakeholder engagement, such as fishers, tourism operators, Traditional Owners and government agencies. Using my skills in project and team management, remote field work, data collection, budgeting, report writing and networking, I actively contribute to the continued success of various long-term research and management projects.
