  Primary driver of a 16 week course-based research project entitled “Exploring the relationship between CUL4B, Paclitaxel Drug Response, and Sex Disparities in Lung Cancer”. Profiled mRNA expression of an X-linked oncogene in tumor and normal lung tissues from non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients in the TCGA cohort. Compared somatic copy number variation changes, somatic mutation profiles, mRNA and mRNA isoform expression signatures, and disease-specific survival in male and female NSCLC patients. Able to perform functional gene characterization using databases and biomedical research literature searches (GeneCards, MalaCards, PubMed). Performed gradient PCR and quantitative RT-PCR after paclitaxel treatment of lung cancer cell lines. Proficient in bioinformatic database analyses (Firebrowse, cBioPortal, TCGA Splicing Variants Database), basic statistical analyses (t-test, ANOVA), qRT-PCR primer design, gel electrophoresis, RNA isolation, DNAse-treatment, cDNA synthesis, quantitative PCR, and delta delta Ct analysis.   I continued my work in Professor Michael W. Butler's laboratory as an EXCEL Scholar over the Summer 2021. In addition to continuing to monitor songbird nests, I assisted in banding and bleeding of nestlings. Blood from the nestlings was used to measure ketones and glucose with point-of-care devices and ketones, glucose, lipids, and biliverdin with lab assays. In addition, I began a project I will be continuing in my independent study throughout the academic year. This project is a collaboration with the Chemistry department and focuses on examining biliverdin's capacity to function as an antioxidant at physiologically relevant levels. Show less
