      This ethnographic project was led by Dr. Kate Hudepohl, Dr. Darlene Applegate, Dr. Ashley Stinnett, and Dr. Erika Brady. The project consisted of: processing cultural ethnographic data for two National Park Service grant projects Mammoth Cave National Park & Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park by way of various Fieldwork protocols and duties for research assistants such as: Listening to interviews, conducting interviews, creating transcriptions, creation of master topics, labeling, cataloging linguistic material, proofreading reports, photography for documentation of specific sites of interviews, archival research, and travel. Show less Projects would consist of a multitude of duties to help prevent the destruction and looting of archaeological sites within Mammoth Cave National Park (The world’s largest cave system). Duties: Surveying, analyzing archaeological sites and artifacts, journaling, photography, mapping, GPS navigation, trekking, archival research, and the possible recovery/preservation of artifacts. The importance of the job directly relates to the overall protection of over a 100+ sites (Caves, shelters, graves, and other historical sites) within the National Park. Working alongside Edward Jakaitis (Cultural Resource Manager for MCNP) & under Dr. Darlene Applegate (WKU Folk and Anthropology Department Head) a multitude of skills were emphasized such as teamwork, communication, preservation, direct NAGPRA & Law Enforcement connectivity, and more. Notable Projects: Reburial of Native American remains & restoration of archaeological site (graffiti removal, cleaning, replacement, and proper excavation), Post Contact torch discovery, recovery, and preservation, Petroglyph discovery & preservation).
