    • Freedata Ltd.

      May 1996 - Sept 1997
      Contract Engineer

This company I setup to handle my contracting days after leaving the forces. I held sub contracting positions with several IT Field service companies in the area, covering holidays etc. I used all the experience gained in the Army and previously to diagnose and repair laptops, desktops, printers etc. Having very good knowledge of MS DOS 3.1 through to 6.1 and Windows for Workgroups helped to ensure that customers systems were tuned and working to best of my ability. My strong work ethic and ability to resolve 90% of calls on the first visit soon got me noticed and I was made a good offer to join the company. Show less

    • SCC

      Sept 1997 - Jan 2017

In this role for SCC I am now working as a Technical Consultant implementing NetApp storage products for a variety of customers, using my years of experience and knowledge of NetApp best practices to guide projects to a successful conclusion. I am responsible for architecting and writing the low level design documentation; right through to deploying the designed system. I have to manage my time with in these projects and often have great input in the project management as a whole. The various projects that I have been involved in during this time have included Linux KVM & Xen Clusters to VMWare vShpere virtualization implementations with some physical servers for dedicated MS SQL and Exchange environments. I have also been able to develop and understand the various migration processes for moving customer environments from NetApp 7-Mode storage to Clustered DataONTAP; these processes can also be used to move None NetApp to NetApp, this has meant that I have to have a very good understanding of various operating systems and their connectivity through Fabric or Network infrastructure to DataONTAP and the NetApp management and backup stacks. Using my knowledge of programing languages, I have been able to write several workflows within WFA to Automate various tasks and often use the NetApp PowerShell and Java SDK to write other custom utilities to help in my day to day delivery of projects. Recently I have just completed a project where we needed to automate the migration of Virtual Machines from one Virtual Centre to another, this I accomplished using NetApp WFA as an orchestration engine and the creation of several custom commands and helper utilities to modify in guest parameters, some of these used REST API's to get the correct information from the WFA instance. Show less Since 2003 I've been working in the Enterprise Support Group, this team is comprised of dedicated specialists working with a wide range of products and platforms. Here I'm the main technical lead on Sun Microsystems equipment, from low end 1U servers through to the mid range E6900 platform and of course the newer T & M series systems. A thorough understanding of Solaris currently holding SCSA and SCNA, running on SPARC and X64 architecture's along with additional software like Sun clusterservices has been a major requirement of the role. Additional product knowledge has been gained over the time I have been with the group, I also currently hold Cisco's CCNA, and NetAPP's NCDA and NCIE. I have spent time working with VMWare's VSphere product line which we use in our lab environment to help replicate customer problems. Having a working knowledge of Microsoft's products from desktop and server OS to Exchange and MSSQL, has been useful in resolving problems in todays hetrogeous environments often encountered at customers datacentres. Haing a UNIX engineer's background I have used scripting in my day to day role to help resolve problems that need automation and the Java language to write some tools and GUI's to make life a bit easier. Show less I first joined the company as Info Products UK which was soon taken over by Compel Source and laterly by SCC. I continued in my role as a field service engineer expanding my knowledge to servers and storage systems mostly Compaq. Due to my earlier knowledge of UNIX and my personal experience with Linux I was soon offered a move into the Enterprise Support Group, where I was introduced to Sun Microsystems equipment and was the first in the company to achieve the Solaris Certified Systems Administrator exam and have been a leading member of the team since.
