      Honorary Doctored awarded in 2022, the final year before Mills College's merger, in recognition of my work as a public servant. As a City Councilmember, I established the Department of Violence Prevention, confronted environmental injustice, and fought to protect seniors and other vulnerable populations. This honorary degree was a touching acknowledgment of my longstanding advocacy to lift up marginalized communities.

As a first-generation college student from a low-income single-parent household, gaining admission and graduating from UC Berkeley was a tremendous achievement. During my time there, I was actively involved in student affairs, serving as chapter president for the NAACP and in supporting roles for the Black Student Union. These experiences cultivated my lifelong passion for lifting up marginalized voices and working to eradicate community violence.
