    • The University of British Columbia

      2013 - 2015
Master of Science (M.Sc.) Zoology/Animal Biology

Activities and Societies: Zoology Graduate Students' Association I studied marine biology and fisheries at the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries and conducted the first underwater seahorse research in southern Vietnam. My research focused on garnering biological, fisheries and trade data through field work, community outreach and literature reviews. This information contributed to efforts to keep Vietnamese seahorse populations sustainable in the wild.

      Apr 2012 - Aug 2012
      Student Biologist

As a student biologist with the NCC, I was involved in many different projects. I helped conduct a biodiversity assessment including amphibian inventory, locating and investigating rare plants, small mammal trapping and identification, and avifauna inventory. I also conducted research regarding the implementation of dune ecosystem rehabilitation.

    • Sustainable Seas Trust

      Oct 2012 - Mar 2013
      Environmental Educator

I developed and tested educational materials to promote ocean sustainability to tourists and community members. I led marine eco tours, community education and ocean research. I wrote and submitted funding applications and research proposals for a variety of topics including small-scale fisheries and local cetacean and shark populations. I established a newsletter for the Sustainable Seas Centre in St Francis for public outreach. This placement was organized through the Canadian International Development Agency’s International Youth Internship Program and managed by the Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland. • Camp Potlatch

      Jun 2013 - Aug 2013
      Wilderness Leadership Guide

I coordinated and led weeklong hiking and canoeing trips for youth at risk aged 14 to 16. I taught valuable outdoors skills to participants, engaged youths on environmental issues and fostered healthy relationships between participants.

    • The University of British Columbia

      Sept 2013 - Dec 2015

My tasks included communicating to the public through written and online media; assessing Sygnathid species for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species; organizing and recording notes at lab meetings; and mentoring new graduate students. I conducted field research in Vietnam on vulnerable seahorse populations (see: www.projectseahorse.org/research-seahorses-vietnam), which contributed to my dissertation and two publications currently in review. I was responsible for organizing the laboratory schedule, developing lab guidelines and marking rubrics. I taught lectures, led weekly laboratory experiments for students, held office hours to tutor undergraduate students, and provided support for teaching assistants.

      • Research Assistant

        Sept 2013 - Dec 2015
      • Teaching Assistant

        Sept 2013 - Apr 2015
    • T.Buck Suzuki Environmental Foundation

      May 2015 - Sept 2017
      Community Development Director

I developed practical solutions to achieve a healthy coast with vibrant communities connected to sustainable, independent fisheries for future generations. I participated in several multi-stakeholder initiatives aimed at reducing marine pollution, mitigating the impacts of marine debris, creating marine plans for BC, and planning for coastal change near cities. Through these initiatives, I fostered and maintained positive relationships with community stakeholders, First Nations, ENGOs, academics, and industry members. I designed and co-ordinated the inaugural BC Young Fishermen’s Gathering, an educational two-day workshop for new entrants to commercial fishing that encouraged stewardship and independent fishing operations. I authored or contributed to reports on the state of coastal communities, fisheries management, and community supported fisheries. Show less

    • Yayasan Masyarakat dan Perikanan Indonesia (MDPI Foundation)

      Sept 2017 - Apr 2018
      Fisheries Improvement Officer

I worked to ensure that robust systems are in place to collect, store and analyse fisheries data that are capable of feeding into fisheries management approaches, and to make this available to relevant stakeholders including fishers and the government. With the Fisheries Improvement team, I helped strengthen technological innovation to support Indonesian fisheries management, build capacity, and strengthen the position of small-scale fisheries in Indonesia and the region.

    • Emerald Sea Protection Society

      Mar 2018 - now

I have helped secure large multi-year grants to expand our capacity to recover lost fishing gear throughout coastal BC. I have implemented project management tools, regular board meetings, file organization, and hired two part-time staff members that I am co-responsible for supervising. I have helped our small organization make huge progress towards our goal of protecting marine life and sensitive ecosystems from the damage of lost fishing gear and marine debris in BC.

I led the Sea Garden Restoration Project at Gulf Islands National Park Reserve, a collaborative initiative between Parks Canada and Coast Salish Nations to improve intertidal ecosystem health through ancestral eco-cultural tending practices. Working alongside WSANEC and Hul'q'umi'num' people, we actively managed coastal rock-walled terraces that were built and maintained by Coast Salish peoples for the past 3,000 years. We studied these beaches to understand the effects of tending practices, contaminants, and shifting environmental conditions; and shared stories of these places with Canadians and visitors from abroad.I managed staff, worked closely with Coast Salish and academic partners, oversaw scientific research and community outreach, constructed detailed work plans, managed finances, kept us on track to achieve our milestones, and communicated our results to a broad stakeholder audience. Show less I work collaboratively with Hul'q'umi'num and W̱SÁNEĆ Nations on the Clam Garden Restoration Project in Gulf Islands National Park Reserve. This six-year initiative involves restoring clam gardens, improving harvest opportunities for Coast Salish Nations, and building our understanding of how traditional resource management impacts intertidal ecosystems and can inform resource management. I develop and deliver public talks, education opportunities, and visitor experiences. I'm also involved in the ecological aspects of restoration including data collection, analysis, interpretation and reporting. Show less
