  • About me

    Space Physicist - Data Scientist

  • Education

    • University of Alaska Fairbanks

      -
      Master's degree Physics

Wrote a simulation of Pc 3-4 wave propagation into the dayside magnetosphere from a source in the solar wind.

    • University at Albany, SUNY

      -
      Bachelor's degree Physics
    • University of Washington

      1995 - 2002
      Ph.D Physics

Atividades e grupos:St. Benedict's Young Adult Service Group, American Geophysical Union I earned my Ph.D by building instruments which were placed on a rocket which was launched into outer space. After launch, I analyzed the data and created a model which explained the observations. Published papers in refereed scientific journals advancing the understanding of the phenomena of pulsating aurora. Considered an expert in the field of pulsating aurora.

    • University of Montana

      2019 - 2022
Master of Science - MS Mathematics - Data Science
    • University at Albany

      1988 - 1990
Bachelor's of Science Physics Cum Laude

Atividades e grupos:Society of Physics Students Degree in Physics

    • University of Alaska Fairbanks

      1991 - 1995
      Masters of Science Physics

Atividades e grupos:Studied the Aurora Borealis, American Geophysical Union My Master's thesis was a computer simulation of PC-3 wave propagation in the dayside magnetosphere. My results showed that these waves are initially found in the solar wind and are then transmitted into the magnetosphere when the clock angle is found to be in certain orientations.

  • Experience

    • University of Washington

      Jan 1995 - Jan 2002

Analysis of electron data from an electrostatic analyzer, a continuation of the work done for my Ph.D dissertation. Designed, built and calibrated six solid state telescopes for a rocket based experiment on pulsating aurora.

      • Post-doctoral Scientist

        Mar 2002 - Jan 2002
      • Research Assistant

        Jan 1995 - Mar 2002
    • Northwest Space Research

      Jan 2002 - Jan 2002
      Post-doctoral Scientist

Algorithm development for analysis of low energy electron data (E < 1 keV) from the PEACE instrument for the Cluster mission. Explored the effects of spacecraft charging and how it alters the measurement of low energy electrons.

    • Bechtel Nevada

      Jan 2003 - Jan 2004
      Senior Scientist

Developed and executed a course in the physics of radiation for first responders. Showed first responders how a dosimeter works and why they are important safety equipment.Taught approximately 10000 students about radiation and safe practices while in a radiation field. Taught the same students about the use of radiation detection instruments.

    • University of Montana

      Jan 2005 - Jan 2008
      Post-doctoral Research Associate

Performed data analysis of the Cassini CAPS instrument. I developed new algorithms to determine atomic and molecular species from the data stream. Recalibration of the PEPE ion mass spectrometer. Performed data analysis from the newly recalibrated data.

    • University of Iowa

      Jun 2005 - Jan 2005

Analysis of electric field data from the Radio and Plasma Wave Science (RPWS) instrument located on the Cassini spacecraft. Taught introductory calculus-based physics class, emphasis on mechanics and Newton's laws.

      • Post-doctoral scholar

        Jan 2004 - Jan 2005
      • Adjunct faculty

        Jun 2005 - Jan 2005
    • University of Montana

      Jan 2008 - Jan 2012
      Adjunct Professor of Physics

Taught introductory physics and astronomy courses as well as advanced courses in modern physics and planetary astronomy. Taught algebra and pre-calculus in the mathematics department. Developed new curriculums which included electronic classroom participation, resulting in an overall increase in learning retention and final grade. Taught 500 students per semester for two years.

    • University of Colorado at Boulder

      Jan 2008 - Jun 2009
      Research Associate

Performed data analysis of the Cassini mission's CAPS instrument. I focused on exploring the validity of the data collected and understanding the error associated with the data analysis process. Work led to publication of results in refereed journal and increased the understanding of the plasma environment in and around Saturn.

    • Autumn Colors Painting, LLC

      Jan 2012 - Jan 2021
      Company Owner

Independent contractor and business owner providing commercial and residential painting, carpentry and other general contracting services. Business run by word of mouth, never had a dissatisfied customer. Painted churches, schools, houses, decks and barns. Designed and built drip irrigation system.

    • University of Alaska

      Jan 2012 - Jan 2013
      Visiting Assistant Professor

Teaching introductory physics (calculus and non-calculus based) courses as well as advanced optics (lab and lecture). Taught 200 students and developed new curriculums including electronic classroom participation and electronic homework.

    • I2 Strategic Services, LLC

      Jan 2021 - now
I2 Strategic Services in Cooperative Agreement with Space Physics and Atmospheric Research Center

I currently work with Air Force Academy cadets on space-based science projects. Such as running a Hall effect thruster, attempting to determine what set of parameters cause the breathing mode instability. I am also analyzing electron data from the SEED experiment on the STPSat-6 spacecraft (geosynchronous orbit) as well as analyzing ion data(O+) from the EPEE ion spectrometer. EPEE is located on the international space station. I further work with cadets on analyzing data from event based sensors located on either the space station or at ground stations. We attempt to determine what types of objects are being observed. I have helped to build and calibrate both the EPEE instrument as well as ODIN, an optical instrument to be launched in 2025 to operate on the space station. A further task from the STPSat-6 instrument is to analyze the dosimeter data recorded on the satellite. I am part of the team using GEANT to model the incoming particle flux in an effort to determine the radiation dose experienced on board the spacecraft. Exibir menos
