  Internship student Hot Corrosion

  In the dehydrogenation reactor in the Borealis production site of Kallo, an explanation is needed for the complete disintegration of the material of the gas sampler’s support. The reactor system uses a catalytic process to convert propane into propylene. At several depths in the catalyst bed, online gas probes are monitoring the gas composition and temperature. The first setup of the gas sampler was constructed in a combination of the nickel-chromium alloy and the stainless steel. The support was made out SS and after barely 6 months of service, there was no trace left of the support. The parts in nickel could resist the corrosive atmosphere and were still intact. A complete gas sampler made out this nickel alloy would economically be unfeasible with the given budget. That’s why Borealis opts for a scientific driven material selection to avoid a large price overshoot.
