In my paper I explore the ways that Roman paintings elucidate the evolution of artistic style and taste, the role of women in society, and popular disagreement about the belief in free will versus divinely assigned fate. Religion and education, the fashionability of science, tropes of adventure, economic opportunity, and, perhaps especially, domestic anxieties all play a role in defining gradients of morality across time and the geographic space of the British Empire. Deconstructing alleged encounters with cannibals in light of anthropophagic practices in Europe at the time, and exploring the discomfort of Britain's emergence into a more modern world, my paper sheds light on how the British could justify actions we so easily call immoral today. While in many ways the morals of this period were different from our own, there are also insightful parallels that we can draw to contemporary western society. Show less
