      Detachment operations officer

Operational Helicopter Pilot2 Deployments to the Arabian Gulf on board DDGsDivision Officer in charge of 2 Officers and 4 Enlisted PersonnelEarned Helicopter Aircraft Commander QualificationEarned Officer of the Deck QualificationThis was my first Fleet Squadron. I spent the first couple of years doing lower level division officer jobs while developing my skills as an aviator and ultimately an aircraft commander. This was a great leadership experience, as I moved through many job billets, learning a new job quickly and then leading small teams to achieve success. It was also the foundation for learning how to lead a combat aircrew, especially in terms of decision-making and communication in a pressurized cockpit environment.Later in this tour I served on a detachment as the Operations Officer. Here I had to learn how to integrate a 26 man detachment into a contributing member of a much larger carrier strike group. I learned a great deal about timely and precise communication, detailed planning, and extreme flexibility. I also saw first hand how well a tight team can perform in a stressful environment when the right foundation is laid for unit cohesion. Show less

Helicopter pilot / operations officer (department head)

Department Head leading staff of 5 Officers and 10 Enlisted PersonnelMission Planning Program Manager (developed academic syllabus and lab practical to train fleet operators in large scale mission planning)Anti-Submarine Warfare Program Manager (directly involved in developing fleet tactics and influencing acquisitions)Seahawk Weapons and Tactics Instructor (responsible for teaching tactics to fleet aviators on the ground, in simulators, and in flight. This was a challenging position as I spent a good deal of time leading a 15 man team to develop a new training program for fleet aviators coming to the school house. The project took approximately 8 months from inception to completion. This was a great learning experience in team building, innovation, practical execution, and project advocacy. I had to sell my team's vision and idea to a sometimes critical fleet audience. It ended up being a great success, but there were many lessons in integrating team ideas into a cohesive product along the way.I also had the opportunity to develop tactical guidance for new helicopter ASW technology. This was a solo venture, which was difficult while managing my other duties. After development, I was responsible for creating buy-in from larger organizational stake-holders and got my feet wet in the world of acquisitions. This was a great chance to learn about adapting presentations for different audiences and understanding how to communicate with multiple stakeholders with different goals and levels of interest. Cvw-9 helicopter operations / carrier strike group 3 / uss john c. stennis / helicopter pilot

Responsible for leadership, planning, and execution of all Carrier Air Wing Nine Helicopter Operations and for Air Wing Integration for 2 Helicopter Squadrons and multiple detachments in a complex, high speed combat environment during two deployments to the Arabian Gulf on board the aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis.Outside of my standard duties of current and future operations, I spent a good deal of time leading cross-functional teams in the development of new aviation and strike group tactics. This led to the opportunity to develop my skills in communicating with other teams that had vastly different subject matter expertise and perspective than my own. I was fortunate to have some great mentors on the Senior level to help me learn some of the finer arts of communicating and creating cross-team cohesion.I also had the opportunity to work with some of the US Navy's global partners including France, Great Britain, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Malaysia, and Singapore. I found myself conducting daily and short term operational planning with a New French ship/helicopter detachment or sitting down and having one on one conversations with a Malaysian admiral about helicopter tactics and technology. It was a great chance to apply some of what I learned in my Global Leadership courses, especially cultural intelligence and sensitivity, breaking language barriers (especially when face to face communication is not possible), and team building. • Hsm-71 department head (helicopter squadron)

      Jun 2013 - Jan 2016
Operations officer, department head, helicopter pilot

I served a senior Department Head in a high performing helicopter squadron. I led Combat Element One (team of 30) as the Officer in Charge through their Initial Ship Aviation Team Training Qualification onboard the USS Mobile Bay (CG-53). It was a rewarding experience that emphasized team building, integrations skills, communication, planning, and time management.I also led the squadron in the Quick Reaction Assessment for Advanced Precision Kill Weapons System rockets (see article below), and the eventual fleet rollout training. This was a chance to flex leadership and how it applies to technology and R&D.I served as the Operations Officer, leading the squadron through workups in preparation for deployment with Carrier Air Wing Nine and The John C. Stennis Carrier Strike Group. I was responsible for the operational conduct of the squadron of 11 helicopters, over 300 personnel and a 9 million dollar budget. I led a team of 5 Officers and over 30 enlisted Aircrewmen. This demanding job relied critically on leadership, communication both vertically and laterally inside the organization, negotiation, cross-functional team building, and stakeholder analysis. Led a small team in developing and marketing a comprehensive training and development program for over 50 Counter Weapons of Mass Destruction Analysts. This role offered the experience of developing programs for specialists in a field I was not previously familiar with. Success required networking with multiple interagency partners and benchmarking techniques for baseline assessment standards. Show less

    • Training squadron 28 (vt-28)

      Jan 2019 - Jul 2022

Led a squadron of 60 Active duty and reserve Navy and Marine Corps flight instructors, 10 Department of Defense Civilians, and a rolling group of approximately 150 Student Naval Aviators to plan and execute the primary flight training syllabus in the T-6B. Overcoming countless challenges and barriers to production, the Rangers were the only squadron in all of CNATRA to meet or exceed student production requirements for the past three years. We were subsequently awarded the CNATRA 2021 and 2022 Production Excellence Award for the best Primary Squadron, the 2021 Chief of Naval Operations Commander Theodore G. Ellyson Production Excellence Award for efficiency, ability to meet fleet requirements for production, time to train, and mitigation strategies to combat external resource or execution barriers, the 2022 Chief of Naval Operations Safety Award, and the highly coveted 2022 Vice Admiral Robert Goldthwaite Training Excellence Award for the best squadron in all of CNATRA!I also oversaw the creation, development, and implementation of the first three iterations of CNATRA's Project Avenger- a prototype primary flight training syllabus designed to develop a more capable, self-sufficient aviator, proficient in a dynamic and fluid environment, and to do it more efficiently than the current training program to increase fleet naval aviator readiness. This innovative and extremely successful program will drastically change the way we train naval aviators for years to come. Show less

      Operations officer

Executive leader in charge of all aircraft carrier operations for a crew of 6000 sailors, 64 aircraft, and 2 nuclear reactors. My primary areas of oversight were future and current operations, staff integration, carrier self-defense, air operations, air traffic control, department head integration, and management of specific secure programs. I led my team during a historic deployment to the 5th Fleet Area of Operations, defending and engaging the Houthi Rebels in Yemen in a righteous fight for freedom of Navigation in the Red Sea. Our Carrier Strike Group participated in the most active naval warfare since World War II, regularly defending against ballistic missiles, anti-ship cruise missiles, one way attack unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned surface vehicles, and unmanned subsurface vehicles. Our team's professionalism and performance in combat resulted in the Secretary of the Navy awarding us the Combat Action Ribbon, which is unprecedented for Modern Aircraft Carriers. I'm am proud to have made an impact on the awesome team of the "Mighty IKE," and focused every day on our namesake's motto "Greater Each Day!" Show less
