  • About me

Research & Intelligence Manager | Spatial Data Champion | 11 yrs in Local Government

  • Education

    • University of Wales, Aberystwyth

      2007 - 2008
Master of Science (MSc) Glaciology Distinction

During my masters I gained valuable experience using GIS and Remote Sensing as well as planning and conducting my own research projects. I also gained significant fieldwork experience including a six week trip camping at the foot of a glacier in South East Switzerland.

    • The University of Sheffield

      2003 - 2006
Bachelor of Science (BSc) Geography 2:1 (hons)
    • University of Wales, Aberystwyth

      2009 - 2013
      Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Glaciology

Primarily using remotely-sensed data, this study provides a detailed analysis of the dynamics of a land-terminating outlet on the western flank of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Seasonal melting at the ice sheet margins results in the formation of large perennial supraglacial lakes which drain intermittently. Using repeat optical satellite images this study quantifies 11 years (2002-12) of water storage and drainage of ∼200 supraglacial lakes using a depth-reflection function to derive volume. Temporal and spatial clustering of lake drainage events suggests a common, dynamic, synoptic trigger-mechanism, with no evidence of a unifying critical size (volume/depth) dependent drainage threshold. Intermittent decanting of lakes lead to short-lived, localised episodes of ice flow acceleration, punctuating the seasonal flow regime. Show less

    • Aberystwyth University

      Jan 2009 - Jul 2013

A paid, National Environment Research Council (NERC) funded doctorate for research which focussed on understanding the dynamics of the Greenland Ice Sheet in response to climate change. The research was multi-faceted; monitoring spatio-temporal variations in supraglacial lake drainage, analysing seasonal changes in ice surface velocity and examining high-resolution ice surface elevation variations. I presented my research at national and international conferences and published the results in a number of peer-reviewed scientific journals (see publications section). Show less

    • Kirklees Council

      Aug 2013 - Jun 2018

My time was split between the Geographic Research and Information Team and Public Health Intelligence.GIS teamI help maintain the councils internal web mapping system (Pitney Bowes Stratus). I provide Stratus training and troubleshooting for council staff (>900 users) and promote GIS self-service.I undertake spatial analysis projects for the council and assist with the management of the local land and property gazetteer (LLPG) for Kirklees. During my post I have developed a deep knowledge of Pitney Bowes GIS software, MapInfo, and its extensions; Vertical Mapper and Route-finder.Public Health IntelligenceFrom September 2014 (until Sept 2015) I have been seconded to Kirklees Public Health Intelligence Team. I undertake projects using public health data and provide maps and spatial analysis. A recent project involved assisting with the production of Kirklees Pharmaceutical Needs Assessment 2014 (link below). Show less

They have handled complex datasets, compiled configurations & managed the accuracy of data before using Spectrum Spatial to display the data in interactive maps. The team have also integrated Objective [an interface that allows people togive feedback] into Spectrum which has meant that members of the public can easily make comments on the spatial data whilst providing officers with concise and accurate customer feedback on specific pieces of land. The project has been a real success. Customers have been able to access good quality and complex data in an easy to read/understand format. They have had the autonomy to switch between different data views to see what they want and to make comment with immediate reference to what they're looking at. This has resulted in a flood of rich in-depth feedback which is easily managed by officers as it has been attributed to specific data elements.Youtube linkhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=id4Oulkj8uY&feature=youtu.beTeam members - Jamie Tasker, Andrew Fitzpatrick, Sara Wilson, Andy Shackleton, Suzanne Roberts, Ailsa Stott, Mike Bradford, Abdul Gardee, Victoria Coleman, Anna Bowtell Show less
