    • A.N Fraser Joinery and Building Contractor

      May 2014 - Sept 2018
      Range of Roles

During my time here i have gain valuable practical experience in multiple trades including joinery and brick work. The majority of my time here would be civils based working with machine men laying drainage, digging foundations and working with concrete for floors and foundations. After passing my HGV class 1 licence I often drove our wagon and drag lorry delivering materials to sites and shifting all types of machinery between sites. In this job I also created all types of architectural drawings on AutoCAD software for houses including floor plans and elevations etc. I would then go on to apply for planning permission and building warrants using these drawings. Drawings would often include multiple changes to design throughout the process as the client would refine the exact bespoke solution required. Show less

    • BSW Timber Ltd

      May 2015 - Sept 2015
      Student Engineer

Over the 2015 summer I spent my time working in the local Sawmill in Fort William. This is one of the largest sawmills in the U.K with the ability to process up to 450000m3 of round wood timber per year. In this role I was mainly based in an office in which I carried out a large amount of Auto-CAD work. The drawings were mainly of general machinery parts, such as drive shafts, roller brackets, sprockets and other parts. It was often necessary to have these drawings done quickly however still accurately if the production line was shut down due to a broken part. This part would need to be drawn and then sent away to be made up for installation the next day. Also in this job, I was supervising concrete works in the wood yard. Some areas of the yard the concrete had become cracked and uneven due to general wear and tear. During the works, I would be in charge of marking out areas for cutting and breaking out. Then coming back and measuring for the volume of concrete needed and ultimately ordering the concrete. Throughout this process I would also help generally labouring with the maintenance team if the help was needed in preparation for a concrete pour. Show less

    • BAM Nuttall Ltd

      May 2016 - Sept 2016
      Student Civil Engineer

During both 2016 and 2017 summer breaks from university I worked with BAM Nuttall on two separate sites each summer. During the 2016 summer I worked at the Loch Buidhe substation, a 132/275kv substation on the North-East Coast. As this was my first time working with modern setting out equipment such as Total Station machines and GPS equipment I spent the first few weeks being mentored by a more experienced engineer used to using these machines. After some tuition, I quickly managed to get to grips with these machines and was often sent to set out certain parts of the project including precast foundations, drainage ducting and internal road kerbs etc. During this placement, I was often asked to work with general operatives to set lasers (including graded lasers) and levels throughout the whole site. This was a large project and as such gained experience in a wide variety of civil engineering work. Show less

    • BAM Nuttall Ltd

      May 2017 - Sept 2017
      Student Civil Engineer

During my 2017 summer I returned to work for BAM Nuttall this time however at Melgarve, a 132/400kv substation near Aviemore. This was a much smaller site and as such when I first arrived on site there was much fewer Engineers on site. Due to this within my first week I was ‘thrown in at the deep end’ as if it were taking some charge of installing precast foundations throughout the site. This included marking areas for blinding using GPS equipment and setting laser levels for this. Then after placement of the bases coming back round with the total station and positioning the bases to within 5mm of their design position. Although challenging I felt comfortable in doing this work and all bases were ultimately set to well within their tolerance. After completion of the precast bases laying I moved on to looking after the internal substation roads which involved setting pins and levels for Kerber’s to lay to and also grade lasers for grading type 1 sub base etc.On both this project and Loch Buidhe, I had experience using Autodesk BIM software and particularly in Melgarve used this to track progress of all aspects of the job as it progressed Show less
